WORK EXPERIENCE:

Portland Public Library, Teen Librarian, Portland, ME (March 2010 - Present)
  • Management: Oversaw a team of three part time employees on daily basis, developed and coordinated a budget for teen materials and programming for one main library and three branch libraries.

  • Teen Library Development: Along with Portland Public Library Administration, I helped organize the grand opening of the Portland Public Teen Library in April 2010 and since then have been responsible for establishing and reaching the long and short term goals and objectives of the teen library program.

  • Teen Collection Development: Responsible for collection development and weeding of all materials in the teen collections among the five branches of the Portland Public Library. Collections include fiction, non-fiction, reference and audio books; DVDs; music; Playaways and magazines.

  • Video Game Collection Development: Created and maintained the circulating video game collection at the Portland Public Library. Started in July 2010 and currently circulates 197 items.

  • Community Outreach: Locate and establish connections with local community organizations such as The Telling Room, Portland Police Department, the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine, and local area high schools.

  • Programming: Created and implemented a teen programming schedule with events such as Open Mic, Video Game Nights, and World Cup 2010 events, and regular teen movie nights.

  • Collaborative Programming: Worked with local organizations and community members such as Casablanca Comics, The Telling Room, musician Sonya Tomlinson and others to create events for teens. Programs with the Telling Room include the Game On: Creating Your Own Video Game workshop and the Young Writers and Leaders program. Programs with Sonya Tomlinson included "Make Music at the Library" which was a four week music workshop where the end result produced original music created by local teens. Organized the Reading Buddies program for children and teens with the assistance of the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine.

  • Digital Presence: Outlined, developed, and implemented a plan for integrating Web 2.0 technology into teen services. Services used included Wordpress, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

  • Connect In Team: As a member of the Connect In Team, I worked with Portland Public Library Administration and Vont Internet Marketing to conceptualize and implement a new website for the library (ongoing project, started in May 2011).

  • Teen Team: As the leader of the Teen Team, I developed the overview and scope of the team and worked with library administration at implementing this team approach to library services.

Cape May County Library, Teen Librarian, Cape May Court House, NJ (May 2008 - March 2010)
  • Teen Programming: Plan and initiate the following ongoing teen programs: Teen Book Club, Teen Advisory Board, Teen Lock-in, Teen Yoga, Teen Movie Nights, and a cartooning workshop with artists Raina Telgemier and Dave Roman

  • Teen Collection Development: Responsible for collection development and weeding of all materials in the teen collections among the eight branches of the Cape May County Library, including one Bookmobile. Collections include fiction, non-fiction, reference and audio books; DVDs; music; Playaways and magazines.

  • Teen Patron Support: Provide reference to teen patrons and assist with homework, library databases and finding materials.

  • Web 2.0 Utilization: Embrace social networking services, blogs and podcasts to communicate with Cape May County-area teens and also spread information about the library and its events, book and resource collections.

  • Make use of Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, FriendFeed, Blogger, Google Docs, and Google Analytics.

  • Created and maintain the Cape May County Library Teen Zone Blog.

Features book reviews written by Cape May County teens. Regular columns include: Teen Programs; New Book Wednesday; Readers' Advisory; Book Lists; Reviews of Books, Movies and Music; Website of the Week; and instructions on how to use the library databases and Google applications.

  • Created and maintain the Cape May County Library Teen Zone Podcast. Features discussions on the latest books, music and movies, in addition to interviews with teen authors such as Keri Mikulski. Serves as a collaborative project between the Teen Librarian and local teens: Teens provide the content; I record their discussions and then format and publish the podcast. Recorded using a MacBook computer and edited using GarageBand software.

  • Library Management: Serve as one of the library's main supervisors, overseeing the circulation staff and volunteers and managing the facility, as well as handling any problems or challenges that arise and assuring compliance with all regulations of state and other funding agencies.

  • Intra-library Collaboration: Collaborate with the Children's Department on the following programs: Pumpkin Painting Party, Superhero Party, Valentine Craft Nights, and the 2009 Summer Reading Program Express Yourself Mural Project.

  • Team Coordination: Act as the coordinator and work with a team for Game Night @ the Library and National Game Day.

  • Staff/Technology Support: Assisted in the training of staff members when the library switched from the Horizon Library System to the Polaris Library System.

  • Future Program Development: Provide expertise and opinions toward the development of the new Cape May County Library being built, in particular the new teen room, through in-depth research about building progressive, interactive and successful teen departments from the ground up.

Clarion Free Library, Teen Librarian, Clarion, PA (June 2007 - May 2008)
  • Young Adult Programming: Developed and implemented all young adult programs and events; doubled event attendance.

  • Young Adult Space Planning: Sought to develop a permanent young adult space to house all young adult library materials and to provide teenage library-goers with a relaxing communal space to read and study.

  • Collection Development: Selected and ordered all titles for the young adult section.
Young Adult Book Compilation: Organized the assemblage of a bound collection of writings and artwork by local teens.

  • Advisory Board Moderation: Coordinated a Teen Advisory Board that met bimonthly to discuss teens' comments and suggestions of current and future library events and materials.

  • Vinyl Record Preservation: Oversaw digitization and preservation of the children's library vinyl record collection.

  • Grant Writing: Composed and submitted grants to enhance both the young adult section and the library as a whole.

  • Media Relations: Wrote and designed a brochure highlighting the library's policies and services; managed all publicity and advertising done to promote the improved young adult programming.

  • Staff Support: Substituted and served as the Children's Librarian, overseeing scheduled events and running storytime and other job-specific activities for one week.

  • Future Program Development: Aided in the interview process and selection of my predecessor.
